Behind Our Best Seller: The Piha Blend

Mt Atkinson

For over a decade, Piha Blend has held its place as our most beloved coffee — the one we recommend to first-time brewers, loyal locals, and anyone who just wants a really good cup. But what makes it so special? And why the name “Piha”? Let’s take a look behind our best seller.

Why the name Piha?

As a proudly West Auckland coffee roaster and coffee shop, we wanted to ground our blends in the places that shaped us. Piha, with its iconic black sand beach, wild surf, and loyal community, was the perfect fit.

It’s more than just a beautiful spot — it’s a local landmark with heart and grit. That spirit of strength, simplicity, and reliability is exactly what we wanted to capture in a coffee blend.

And honestly? It’s the best beach name and the best blend name.

What makes Piha Blend special?

Jacob, the Mt Atkinson Coffee founder, explains:

“It’s the one blend that people come back to again and again. It’s consistent, it’s smooth, and it doesn’t overcomplicate things. It’s dark chocolate, full-bodied, with a little citrus to lift it. That balance is what makes it such a crowd favourite.”

It’s roasted medium-dark to bring out those rich, chocolatey notes without losing its structure or finish. And it works across everything — espresso, plunger, moka pot, or even filter.

Whether you take your coffee black or with milk, Piha Blend shows up every time.

Why has it been the best seller for 10+ years?

Jacob again:

“I think people trust it. In a world where there are a million coffee options, Piha is the safe bet — not because it’s basic, but because it’s balanced. It’s the coffee you come back to after trying everything else.”

We’ve sold a bag every 8 minutes. Roasted over 600,000 cups worth. We even roast the weight of a young elephant in Piha beans every single month.

That’s a lot of good mornings.

☕ ESPRESSO RECIPE

Here’s a simple way to brew Piha on your espresso machine:

•    Grind: Fine, like table salt
•    Dose: 20g ground coffee in the portafilter
•    Yield: 40g of espresso in your cup
•    Time: Aim for a 30–35 second pour

This gives you a balanced shot with Piha’s classic chocolatey sweetness.

📝 If it tastes sour, grind finer. If it’s bitter, go coarser.
